DIY Safe and Natural Sunscreen

If you’re like me and live in various parts of Canada, you can hardly wait for Spring and Summer and that beautifully hot, Vitamin D producing orb in the sky known as the sun! Vitamin D helps your build your bones and teeth, helps fight depression and studies have shown may reduce

your risk of multiple sclerosis, heart disease and may even help prevent you from catching the flu. All this natural goodness from only 10 minutes of sunshine per day.

The problem is that lounging in the sun also has side effects, primarily skin cancer. Stats for 2104 from the Canadian Cancer Society state: “One in 73 Canadian women will develop melanoma in her lifetime, and 1 in 395 will die from it. In women, the incidence rate increased 1.5% per year between 1986 and 2010, from 8 to 12 cases per 100,000. The death

rate increased by 0.4% per year.”

According to EWG (the watch dog of such things), the ingredients in most sunscreens can be just as harmful. Many sunscreens on the market contain oxybenzene which actually penetrates

the skin and can cause hormone disruption and skin sensitivity. Many of the minerals used in popular brands contain zinc or titanium dioxide in nano-particles. That’s so you won’t see the white of the minerals but nano-particles are also absorbed into the skin. Some contain retinyl

palmitate, which is an antioxidant that combats skin aging but has also been shown to contribute to skin tumors and cancers in the presence of sunlight! I just read that the FDA is looking to ban suntan sprays because people and young children are inhaling the toxic compounds. Oh, and one last thing, as if all that weren’t enough, there is zero evidence that a

sunscreen with SPF greater than 50 is any more effective and in fact, people using 70 and 100 feel like they have more protection and are less likely to re-apply. I could go on and on about why you might wish to stay away from commercial sunscreen, but I guess you’re starting to get

the picture from my rant.

Okay, so what can you do about this whole thing? Well you can make your own, of course!

This is good old fashioned DIY sun protection. Good for you and the kids.

DIY Sunscreen

100 ml red raspberry seed oil (SPF 28-50)

50 ml coconut oil (SPF 4-6)

1/4 cup beeswax (SPF 15)

2 TBSP zinc oxide NON-NANO (Total sun block)

1 TBSP shea butter (SPF 4-6)

Combine all ingredients in a double boiler except red raspberry seed oil and zinc. Allow to melt. Pour into clean jar with tight fitting lid. Add the zinc and seed oil and shake, shake, shake until well blended.

Be extremely cautious when handling the zinc oxide. You do not want to inhale the zinc at all, so you might wish wear some protection around your nose and mouth and be extremely careful.
