So Called Natural Baby Oil/Bug Repellant

This might be more of a rant than a blog, but I just saw a claim on facebook with 368,000 shares of really BAD information. The facebook post went like this:

“Forgot to share this last week... But we found out Aryn is very allergic to mosquito bites (as u can tell in the first photo).... So I did a lot of searching and was told about Johnson's Creamy Baby Oil. I but it on all the kids Sunday and not one mosquito bite!!!! You could see them fly around aryn but they never once touched her!! I'm amazed! Just thought I would let all u mommies know!! Plus it smells great and has no chemicals:)”

That post was shared May 29 and it went viral.

Do you want to know what the ingredients are in this “chemical free” product?

Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Cocoglycerides, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Dimethicone, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Fragrance, Methylparaben, Mineral Oil, Tetrasodium EDTA, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Extract, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Hydrogenated Cottonseed Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, Glyceryl Oleate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf

Okay, so not all difficult to pronounce ingredients are bad for you. For instance, Cocoglyceride is a sugar made from coconut. Now, take methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben or mineral oil or fragrance. These are hormone disruptors and carcinogens. Fragrance is one of the most toxic substances in cosmetic products. Why? Because you don’t need to list the ingredients that go into fragrance. You could have formaldehyde in fragrance and you would never know it. Also, fragrance can cause huge allergic reactions in adults and kids.

I personally could not see any one thing that would repel bugs, except maybe that the bugs are smarter than we are and won’t even land on this toxic concoction.
