The Benefits of Green Tea for Your Skin
Everyone knows that green tea is a powerful antioxidant. But did you know that the chemical component in green tea that makes it such a powerhouse is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a member of the polyphenol family. What does this mean for you? The antioxidant qualities make it an anti-carcinogen, purportedly warding off a variety of cancers, including skin cancer. People have also been drinking it for centuries for its detoxifying and weight loss qualities. Pretty impressive stats!
Scientists are starting to study green tea’s effects on the skin. The investigators found that green tea could have profound effects on the skin, not only when taking it internally, but also using it topically!
The polyphenols, especially EGCG have a direct effect on the inflammatory response caused by sun damage. This very same sun damage is the leading cause of skin cancer. Amazingly enough, when skin cells have green tea applied topically, the damage from UVB rays is greatly reduced allowing the cells to heal. That’s pretty amazing!
Green tea’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can also benefit people suffering with skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and psoriasis.
Given all the great qualities of green tea, is it any wonder that we chose to use it in our body butters?
