Ten Ways to De-Stress This Holiday Season


‘Tis the season to be jolly… fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

Unfortunately it’s also the season for major stressors, so I thought I would compile a list of simple things that you can do to get into the holiday spirit without fraying those delicate nerves.

  1. SLEEP: Try to sleep in on the weekends. Sleep is truly restorative and important to our well-being. Sleep provides an opportunity for the body to repair and rejuvenate itself. When we are sleep deprived, not only do we look and feel lousy, but we actually decrease the ability of the body to heal itself, compromising our immune systems.

  2. BATH: Take some time out for yourself, even if it’s 10-15 minutes. Pour yourself a nice warm bath and use your favourite essential oil, (lavender is particularly relaxing), light some candles, put on soothing music and close your eyes.

  3. CAFFEINE: Everyone knows that caffeine can make some people nervous and add to stress and anxiety. A cup of coffee is a nice way to wake up in the morning, but too much caffeine can exacerbate feelings of overwhelm. Try switching to herbal teas later on in the day to give your body a much needed break.

  4. PLAY HOOKIE: Okay, this one is for everyone but my staff lol. But seriously, taking a stress day before you get sick is vital to keeping yourself productive. If taking a full day for yourself isn’t a possibility, try half a day. Even that much extra time to yourself will help you go a long way.

  5. SHOP EARLY: When you shop early and get it out of the way, it gives you a chance to relax and not fight the crowds. Shop local as well. Usually locally owned, smaller stores aren’t the crazy busy beehives that the larger box stores are. Also, that blaring Christmas mall music is an assault to your senses. No one needs that.

  6. GO OUTDOORS: Whether it’s snowing or not, simply going outdoors and taking a walk, building a snowman, having a bonfire is enormously restorative. There’s some really great ions released from being outdoors in nature.

  7. GET SOME EXERCISE: Everyone knows that exercise is good for you. It doesn’t matter whether it’s going for a brisk walk, practicing yoga, going to a Zumba class or doing Crossfit. Simply going at your own pace, without judgement will help to ease your tension. What is it Nike says? “Just do it”!

  8. WATCH WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR MOUTH: this is probably the most difficult time of year to resist all the goodies and treats. It’s also the time for a lot of parties and drinking alcohol. All of this is okay, in moderation, so just be aware of what you’re consuming and you won’t suffer from regret later!

  9. LAVENDER: Spray that ***it everywhere! Spray your pillow. Pour it into your tub. Put a few drops on a paper towel and hide in the furniture everywhere! Wipe your counters with lavender, water and a little vinegar. Put in your diffusers. Simply put, lavender your space up for calming, brain friendly vibes.

  10. HAVE GREAT SEX: Yup! I said it. Sex, intimacy, orgasms all contribute to some of the loveliest hormones free floating through your blood stream. Want an instant vacation? There it is!
